R&B singer-songwriter Tamia was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. Her career got off to a good start when she was heard by legendary producer Quincy Jones, who invited her to provide vocals for "You Put Move on my Heart" from his Q's Jook Joint album. The contribution would earn her a Grammy nomination, as would her next release, "Missing You". The track was her contribution to the Set it Off soundtrack, and the acclaim and resulting profile set the stage for her debut album.
With Jones on production duties, her self-titled debut album went gold, a feat matched by the follow-up, A Nu Day, which has been her best seller to date. The album featured a single written by Missy Elliot, "Can't Go For That", while another track, "Stranger in my House", held the top slot in the dance charts for several weeks.
Gold sales attended her third album, which featured contributions from rappers Fabolous and Talib Kweli. However the follow-up, Between Friends, sold less well, despite chart placings for the singles "Me" and "Almost".
Tamia has also made forays into acting, with Speed 2: Cruise Control and on TV in Beverly Hills 90210.
