Music journalists have created a category just for Tenacious D: 'mock rock'. This is largely because Black and Gass gently poke fun at the 'cock rock' greats who preceded them, much to the delight of their fans.
Since 1994, when 'the D' first played to an audience, Jack Black (vocals) and Kyle Gass (guitar) have affectionately and energetically parodied the rock bands of their youth, such as Dio, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The success of the band was due in part to a television series of the same name, first aired in 1997, and many of the songs from that series made it to the first album Tenacious D which was released in 2001. The first album featured a full backing band, including friends Dave Grohl and Page McConnell.
The album went platinum despite accusations that its humour made it a novelty record, and produced several singles including "Tribute", "Wonderboy", "Dio" and "Fuck Her Gently".
Work on the movie Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny began in 2004, and the accompanying album The Pick of Destiny was released with it in 2006.
There have been hints that Tenacious D will not record again, but nobody is quite sure whether this is a ruse or a fact - you just can't tell with these expletive-loving stoner jokers.
