Texas are a rock band from Bearsden, Glasgow, Scotland. They were founded by Johnny McElhone (formerly of the bands Altered Images and Hipsway) in 1986 and had their performing debut in March 1988 at Scotland's University of Dundee. They took their name from the 1984 Wim Wenders movie Paris, Texas. The band released their debut album Southside in 1989, along with the debut single "I Don't Want a Lover" which was a worldwide success, charting at #8 on the UK Singles Charts and other high charting positions in Europe. Southside debuted at #3 in the United Kingdom and #88 on the US Billboard 200 album charts. Their second album Mothers Heaven was released in 1991, and debuted at #32 on the UK Album Charts; and their third studio album Ricks Road charting at #18 in the UK.
In 1997, Texas released their fourth studio album, the worldwide success White on Blonde which charted at #1 on the UK Album Charts, the first time being in its first week of release, and reached #1 on the UK Charts again in August 1997. Q Magazine readers voted White on Blonde the 86th best album of all time, and White on Blonde was nominated for "Best British Album" at the 1998 BRIT Awards as was "Say What You Want" nominated for "Best British Single", whilst the band themselves were nominated for "Best British Group". All five singles from White on Blonde made the UK Top 10; this being the first Texas album to produce 5 UK Top 10 hits; "Say What You Want" (UK #3), "Halo" (UK #10), "Black Eyed Boy" (UK #5), "Put Your Arms Around Me" (UK #10) and the remixed version of "Say What You Want" was released on March 9, 1998 along with the "Insane" single, and "Insane / Say What You Want (All Day Every Day)" made #4 on the UK Singles Charts.
Their fifth studio album The Hush followed the success of White on Blonde, also making #1 on the UK Album Charts in its first week of release. The three singles released from the album were also successful; all making the UK Top 20, "In Our Lifetime" (UK #4), "Summer Son" (UK #5) and "When We Are Together" (UK #12). The song "Tell Me The Answer" was released as a promo only single. Follow up Texas albums, "Careful What You Wish For" released in 2003 and "Red Book" released in 2005 were less successful; with "Careful What You Wish For" making #5 on the UK Album Charts and "Red Book" only making #16 on the UK Album Charts. After the Red Book tour in 2006, Texas confirmed a hiatus; lead singer Sharleen Spiteri launched a successful solo career, releasing her debut solo album Melody in 2008, and her second solo album The Movie Songbook in 2010. A new Texas album is believed to be released by 2011 by the latest.
