The Fifth Dimension are an American R&B and soul group. They formed in California in 1966 and are best known for taking "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In" and "Up, Up and Away" to the top of the charts.
Their first chart success was with a cover of the Mamas and the Papas record "Go Where You Wanna Go", which made the top 20 of both the R&B and Pop charts, although it was the follow-up "Up, Up and Away" which really lifted the band into public consciousness. The top 10 hit went on to win four Grammys, and pushed its namesake album into the top 10 of the Pop charts.
Their third release Stoned Soul Picnic took them to gold sales, promoted by the single of the same name, and by "California Soul" which was an early work from Ashford and Simpson, who would go on to have success performing their own songs.
The Sixties musical Hair provided the band with a No.1 hit in "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" from The Age of Aquarius. The album also featured "Wedding Bell Blues", another No.1 for the band. After the release of the 1970 Portrait album the group had a few more hits, but the end of the Sixties saw a change in public taste.
The group, with numerous line-up changes, continue to tour today, but they have failed to make the impact of their heyday. Their work was recognised by their induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
