The Apples (In Stereo) are affiliated with the Elephant 6 collective, which is otherwise best-known for including Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal. Forming in the early 90s as The Apples, they had a sunny 60s sound reminiscent of The Beach Boys, but with lo-fi production. It took until 1995 for a debut album to be released: Fun Trick Noisemaker, which attracted a small number of dedicated fans. Third album Her Wallpaper Reverie was released to a mixed response, and three more albums failed to elicit much interest outside their cult fanbase. However, in 2007 their sixth proper album New Magnetic Wonder was met with widely positive reviews. Singer-songwriter and producer Robert Schneider claimed that New Magnetic Wonder included examples of a new musical scale he invented, called the Non-Pythagorean scale.
