Overview Edit

Beatles for Sale is The Beatles' fourth album, released in late 1964 and produced by George Martin for Parlophone. The album marked a minor turning point in the evolution of Lennon and McCartney as lyricists, John Lennon particularly now showing interest in composing songs of a more autobiographical nature. "I'm a Loser" shows Lennon for the first time seemingly coming under the influence of Bob Dylan, whom he met for the first time in New York while on tour, on 28 August 1964.

No single was released in the UK from Beatles For Sale – the non-album tracks “I Feel Fine” and “She's a Woman” performed that role – however, that coupling was followed-up in the US by “Eight Days a Week” which became their seventh Number 1 in March 1965.

The album hit the UK number one spot and retained that position for eleven of the 46 weeks that it spent in the Top Twenty. Again Beatles For Sale did not surface as a regular album in the US until 1987. In its place was “Beatles ‘65” which featured eight songs from Beatles For Sale, plus the A and B-side of ‘I Feel Fine’ and ‘I’ll Be Back’ from the UK ‘s ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ album. Beatles for Sale enjoyed a nine week run at the top of the US charts beginning in January 1965.

5 stars Sombre but still excellent
The fourth album by the Fabs is, yes, kind of subdued, but not by much. There are upbeat numbers like "Rock And Roll Music," the US #1 single "Eight Days A Week," Ringo's cover of Carl Perkins' "Honey Don't," and the Little Richard medley to speed things up. Gee, I've listed the bright spots of the album already!

However, songs like "I'm A Loser," "Baby's In Black," and "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" reflect a kind of weariness creeping in that later evolved into the introspective Rubber Soul…

3 stars Half A Great Album
The boys look weary from their success on this album cover. It's their second album for 1964 and it's known for being another rush job. It suffers from the fact that the rapidly growing songwriting talents of John & Paul were stifled in the need to get product out as quickly as possible. For me, the weakest songs on the album are the covers. Even as a kid I was especially bored by "Rock And Roll Music" and the two Carl Perkins songs though I do like Buddy Holly's "Words Of Love". Three of the be…
