Biography

Edit

Originally named The Dust Brothers, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons grew up in and around the UK dance scene and helped kick start a new genre of music. The single "Chemical Beats" had a ‘big beat’ sound which set the tone for the music scene of the same name, subsequently popularised by Fat Boy Slim and others who took the style and produced a catalogue of hit records. “Chemical Beats” was also included on the Playstation game Wipeout.

The band's original name was a tribute to the Beastie Boys' producers but as their profile rose a name change was in order. In 1995 The Chemical Brothers were born, naming their debut album Exit Planet Dust. With a building reputation as producers they were inundated with requests to do remixes from artists including Manic Street Preachers, The Prodigy and Kylie Minogue. The band were able to capture their sound for live audiences with successful appearances on the festival circuit around the world including Glastonbury in the UK and at gigs in South America.

Along with their success as producers and artists they also picked up awards for their videos “Let Forever Be” and “Star Guitar”, both directed by Michel Gondry. Their track “Rock Drill” was chosen to accompany an installation at the Tate Modern gallery in London.
