Biography

Edit

The Cure emerged from southern England in the late 1970s into a rock scene dominated by post-punk and new wave, where they comfortably held their own; but in developing their own gloomy guitar-based sound they went on to help instigate the gothic rock genre and everything that followed from it.

Formed by Robert Smith in the mid-70s, it took until 1979 before a debut album was released - Three Imaginary Boys. With two memorable singles - "Killing An Arab" and "Boys Don't Cry" and an upbeat post-punk sound, it was simple and effective but not an obvious precursor for what would follow. 1980's Seventeen Seconds was sombre and atmospheric, especially the creepy single "A Forest", and indicated a new, dark direction. This was confirmed with Faith (1981), a relentlessly miserable record of frightening beauty, and taken a step further with Pornography (1982), which added Joy Division's aggressive drive to the glum, murky atmospheres. These three records, together with the contemporaneous output of Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus and Joy Division, comprised the foundation of gothic rock.

After a couple of unusually sunny hit singles ("Let's Go To Bed" and "The Lovecats"), The Cure returned with The Top in 1984, and The Head on the Door in 1985. The latter was an international hit thanks to it's two singles, "In Between Days" and "Close To Me". Though the band retained a melancholy edge, Smith had matured into a songwriter capable of appealing to a wider audience. A double LP in 1987 - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me - sold well again thanks to "Just Like Heaven", but the Cure's biggest success came with Disintegration in 1989. Disintegration was a return to The Cure's original darkness and despondency, but without being as heavy-going as the earlier albums which only appealed to a small audience. In taking that unappealing emotional sentiment to millions of fans, it sealed The Cure's reputation as rock's finest miserablists.

The Cure continued to record, though nothing again matched the bands' 80s output. In 2000, Bloodflowers was released to complete Smith's idea of a thematic 'trilogy' - following Pornography and Disintegration. It received a Grammy nomination, and otherwise mixed reviews.

The Cure

Feb, 27 2009

Another day, another award ceremony. This time it was the turn of British music magazine NME to dole out the awards, but nobody worried too much who was taking the podium for best/worst dressed or sexiest male/female. Given the indie focus of the magazine, there was little surprise that The Killers won the Best International Band trophy, or that Disney pretty boys The Jonas Brothers scooped both the Worst Band and the Worst Album awards. Many considered the triumph of the night to be the live performance of “This is a Low” by Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon, which marked the first on-stage appearance of the Blur boys since the turn of the century. However there was a middle-aged, lipsticked gent who had a bigger reason to celebrate. In the wake of his reported bitterness towards the huge success of Radiohead’s ‘you-decide-the-cost’ In Rainbows venture, Robert Smith, together with his band The Cure, was happy to accept an award for Godlike Genius, which suggested that he hasn’t lost the love of the British public just yet.

Mopey English rockers The Cure will be shying away from the Southern California sun come April when they headline the closing night of the Coachella festival. Fronted by Robert Smith, The Cure made their name in the 80s with powerfully gloomy albums like Faith, Pornography and Disintegration. The three-day event, which was headlined last year by Jack Johnson, Prince, and Roger Waters performing The Dark Side of the Moon, is this year welcoming Paul McCartney and The Killers to close the first two nights. The line-up announcement was delayed among rumors that organizers Goldenvoice were still trying to sign up more big name acts - and many are still speculating that either Bruce Springsteen or Britney Spears might be late additions to the Saturday bill. But with hundreds of acts performing across several stages, there's no such thing as a gap in a Coachella schedule.

Thirteen is one of those magic numbers, especially if you’re inclined to the morose end of the happy spectrum, like The Cure. The band recently announced that the 13th album is going to hit the stores on September 13 and that in an overload of fate-tempting marketing, one single from the album will be released on the 13th of every month starting on May 13. Each B-side will be exclusive, and will not be available on the double album when it is finally released.
