Another day, another award ceremony. This time it was the turn of British music magazine NME to dole out the awards, but nobody worried too much who was taking the podium for best/worst dressed or sexiest male/female. Given the indie focus of the magazine, there was little surprise that The Killers won the Best International Band trophy, or that Disney pretty boys The Jonas Brothers scooped both the Worst Band and the Worst Album awards. Many considered the triumph of the night to be the live performance of “This is a Low” by Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon, which marked the first on-stage appearance of the Blur boys since the turn of the century. However there was a middle-aged, lipsticked gent who had a bigger reason to celebrate. In the wake of his reported bitterness towards the huge success of Radiohead’s ‘you-decide-the-cost’ In Rainbows venture, Robert Smith, together with his band The Cure, was happy to accept an award for Godlike Genius, which suggested that he hasn’t lost the love of the British public just yet.

Mopey English rockers The Cure will be shying away from the Southern California sun come April when they headline the closing night of the Coachella festival. Fronted by Robert Smith, The Cure made their name in the 80s with powerfully gloomy albums like Faith, Pornography and Disintegration. The three-day event, which was headlined last year by Jack Johnson, Prince, and Roger Waters performing The Dark Side of the Moon, is this year welcoming Paul McCartney and The Killers to close the first two nights. The line-up announcement was delayed among rumors that organizers Goldenvoice were still trying to sign up more big name acts - and many are still speculating that either Bruce Springsteen or Britney Spears might be late additions to the Saturday bill. But with hundreds of acts performing across several stages, there's no such thing as a gap in a Coachella schedule.

Thirteen is one of those magic numbers, especially if you’re inclined to the morose end of the happy spectrum, like The Cure. The band recently announced that the 13th album is going to hit the stores on September 13 and that in an overload of fate-tempting marketing, one single from the album will be released on the 13th of every month starting on May 13. Each B-side will be exclusive, and will not be available on the double album when it is finally released.
