Overview Edit

Her Majesty the Decemberists (often referred to as Her Majesty) is the second full-length album by The Decemberists, released September 9, 2003 by Kill Rock Stars. The song "Song for Myla Goldberg" was written years earlier, after Colin Meloy had been a media escort for novelist Myla Goldberg during a tour following the publication of her first book, Bee Season. "The Bachelor and the Bride" has the words "stripped bare" in the chorus, and appears to be a reference to Marcel Duchamp's piece "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even".

The album cover was made by Portland artist Carson Ellis, long-time girlfriend (and now wife) of Colin Meloy, who has created artwork for each of their albums.

I'll preface my review by saying that I have yet to jump on the Decemberists' bandwagon. Although I enjoyed Castaways and Cutouts, I was hardly washed away like many people seem to have been. It was a bit of a disappointment, as I have always been a huge Neutral Milk Hotel Fan and was excited to hear about a band cracked up to be so similar. Perhaps then, I was the victim of my own expectations. Anyway, this album doesn't even match up with their debut. As in the debut, the lyrics are very inter…
