Overview Edit

Irony Is a Dead Scene is an EP by American mathcore band The Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton, released on August 27, 2002 (see 2002 in music).

The material on this EP was recorded after the departure of the band's original vocalist, Dimitri Minakakis, but before a replacement (Greg Puciato) had been chosen. The plan to record with Patton was in place before a replacement vocalist had been found. By the time Mike Patton had recorded vocals and the EP was released, the band had been touring with Puciato for nearly a year.

The EP was released on vinyl in a variety of different colored versions by Buddyhead Records. Erroneously, or perhaps deliberately, the vinyl label states that the record be played at 45 rpm, but is actually meant to be played at 33 rpm.

Imagine Mike Patton in all his celestial glory fronting one of the most finely tuned precision thrassh out chaos-core (huh? whatever? I won't pretend to know the nominative of the sub-genre DEP are subsumed into: I could give two frux and a plastic spoon. They thrash) bands out there... Getting warmer?

I don't know where to begin. This is one of the most jaw droppingly abrasive, soul-shattering gorgeous, brooding, lung-slittingly ominous, skullbanging, moribundfreaking, pulse-accelerating, beyo…

2 stars Maybe of more interest to Dillinger fans than Patton fans.
Before going any further, I should note that I'm really probably not the best person to review this, Dillinger Escape Plan's sound is way outside of my normal listening realm, but I'm a fan of Mike Patton's work, so I thought I'd check this one out. Having said that, a bit about this.

The music is relentlessly performed, clearly these guys have a good grasp over what they're doing, and they do manage to resist the urge to produce an entire record of fast-and-heavy. For Patton's part, he pulls o…
