Overview Edit

Psychocandy is the debut album by the Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain, released in November 1985. Psychocandy combined the concepts of pop songs and searing guitar chords, typified by Velvet Underground songs.

The album is considered to be a landmark recording, frequently appearing in "best-ever" album lists, such as Q magazine's list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever, where it placed at number 88 in 2000. In 2006, Q magazine placed the album at #23 in its list of "40 Best Albums of the '80s". In 2003, the album was ranked number 268 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 greatest albums of all time". Allmusic described the album as one that "created a movement without meaning to."

5 stars Hear it for the first time
I wasn't old enough to hear the original verison of this album on vinyl so I've always been stuck with the "muddy" sounding original CD version. I'm always a little skeptical about the so-called digitally remastered albums but it seems they took their time on Psychocandy. The album sounds blisteringly better than the older version. I would recomend it to anyone who has listened to the older CD versions, it is great.

1 stars Uninspired
Outside of its historical context... this album to me lacks anything that would qualify it as interesting. It is just a couple of well worn rhythm's and textures repeated ad nauseam.
