Biography

Edit

The Knife are a Swedish electronica duo with four albums, one of which is critically acclaimed worldwide, and a reticent attitude to PR. Both members are only ever seen wearing masks, they rarely appear in public and refused to perform live for several years. The artists originally performed in Sweden's Doundenberg music club where they gained a following

In Sweden they have been known for several years, having released a self-titled debut in 2001 and winning a Grammis award in 2003 for Best Pop Group (Grammis is the Swedish version of Grammy). They became better-known abroad when a José González cover of their song "Heartbeats" was used in a popular TV commercial for Sony. Through 2006 their fourth album Silent Shout slowly gained popularity through word of mouth and increasingly positive reviews. "We Share Our Mothers Health" was featured on iTunes, and the album's popularity peaked after popular indie tastemaking website Pitchfork Media declared it their favourite album of 2006. In 2007, the group won all 6 Grammis categories they were nominated in, but did not attend the award ceremony.

The Knife Create An Opera

Jan, 12 2010

Swedish electronica duo The Knife have agreed to work outside their usual area of expertise by creating the score to an opera. The duo was asked to write the music by the Danish performance group Pro Forma, whose opera is based on the life of Charles Darwin, the British naturalist famed for the revolutionary theory of evolution as defined in “The Origin of the Species.” They were aided in their efforts by the skills of fellow musicians Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, but are happy to admit they were initially daunted by the task. “At first it was very difficult as we really didn't know anything about opera,” Olof Dreijer said. “But after some studying, and just getting used to opera's essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with.” Tomorrow, in a Year marks the first new release from the band since their well received 2006 album Silent Shout and will be released digitally on February 2, with a physical release to follow a month later.
