The Pussycat Dolls started as a burlesque dance troupe, assembled by Robin Antin in 1995 and numbering Carmen Electra as one of their team. Although some cynics might say they are still a burlesque dance troupe, they have had chart success since moving into music in 2003, particularly with the international smash hit single "Don't Cha".
When the Dolls went into music, original member Carmit Bachar was joined by Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Kimberly Wyatt, Melody Thornton, and Nicole Scherzinger, who took the role of lead vocalist. The canny marketing of the band was initiated before the group was even launched. The group performed at the MTV Asia Awards in 2004 and by the close of the year Pussycat Dolls tracks were on the soundtrack for two films, Shark Tale and Shall We Dance?. The first single was “Sway”, but it was “Don’t Cha” (a cover of a Tori Alamaze song) which hit the charts at No.1 in many countries.
Their first album PCD was released in 2005 and six further singles were released from it. The departure of Bachar came as a second album, Double the Trouble, was being prepared for release in 2008. Four of the girls are also undertaking solo projects.
