Biography

Edit

The Roots are a Philadelphia-based alternative rap group whose work has been met with much critical acclaim in recent years. Over several albums they have experimented with replacing sampling with live band music, and introducing rock elements into hip-hop, and seem to have finally found their perfect blend.

The Roots were formed in 1987 but took until 1993 to self-release a debut, called Organix. It earned them a deal with Geffen, who were better known at the time as Nirvana's label. Their second album, Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995), was praised for being played as a live band (rather than relying on sampling), and was widely considered an excellent album. It has now sold over half-a-million copies.

Illadelph Halflife (1996) was also praised, and featured guest appearances from Erykah Badu, Common, D'Angelo and A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip. Their biggest breakthrough came in 1999 with Things Fall Apart, which peaked at No.4 on the Billboard charts and included a Grammy Award-winning single in "You Got Me".

Fifth album Phrenology (2002) saw a change in direction as The Roots eschewed jazz and soul in favour of rock influences. It was a big commercial success, but divided reviewers and fans, some of whom were not keen on the new direction. Similarly, The Tipping Point (2004) reached No.4 in the charts, but was met with a mixed reception. Finally, The Game Theory 2006 was widely acclaimed, with most reviewers deciding that The Roots had found their perfect mix of rock and soul-influenced hip-hop.

Their eighth studio album, Rising Down, was released in spring 2008.

The Roots Plan Soul Covers Album With John Legend

Jun, 27 2010

Just days after The Roots' released their ninth studio album How I Got Over, they've announced details of their next studio project: a covers album with How I Got Over guest John Legend. Named Wake Up! after the Arcade Fire song, the album will feature new versions of 60s and 70s soul classics focused on social consciousness and activism. "These songs sound so relevant now," Legend said about picks such as Marvin Gaye's "Wholly Holy" and Donny Hathaway's "Little Ghetto Boy." "On most of them, you wouldn't change a lyric. 'Wake Up Everybody' (the first single, a cover of the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes hit) has four verses: the first one is a general statement, the second is about education, third is about health care, and the fourth is about making a better environment. No editing needed." The album will feature one brand new track, Legend's "Shine," and will be available from September 21.

The Roots

Nov, 21 2008

The Roots are recovering after their double-decker tour bus crashed while traveling to Paris, where they were due to perform a support slot on Kanye West's European tour. There are no details yet as to the cause of the crash, but the bus apparently flipped on to its roof and landed on top of another van. Other than cuts and bruises and a couple of strained necks, everyone in the band and their crew is OK. Drummer and producer ?uestlove (pictured left with red sweater and scarf) sent a long e-mail to Okayplayer.com describing the night's events just an hour after the accident: "im like.... wait... am i even alive? like what if i "think" im alive when in actually im not like the movies? ----the next 2 minutes proved how alive i was for i managed to crawl through spaces and holes and broken shattered glass like a contortionist blindfolded .... when i got outside .....and looked at what i crawled out of? man. i just couldn't believe it. i mean ....how in the hell did we experience this? how did we manage to ....man ..... dog we are soooo alive right now."
