Wincing the Night Away is a Grammy-nominated album by indie rock group The Shins. It was released by Sub Pop Records on January 23, 2007. It is the band's third album, and the final under their contract with Sub Pop. The album was recorded in James Mercer's basement studio, Phil Ek’s home in Seattle, and in Oregon City with veteran producer Joe Chicarelli (Beck, U2).

5 stars To all the Boo Hooers out there........
Oh no! They didn't produce the exact same records that the previous efforts were. They don't sound like "Oh, Inverted World," and "Chutes Too Narrow," they're not "indie" enough on this record, and Wah Wah Wah. Well guess what; If Pink Floyd didn't evolve, we would have been stuck with "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" for 20 years instead of being treated to "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here." The Beatles would have never achieved Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road and Let it Be. Newsflash to tho…

3 stars Bigger and . . . bigger
Caught The Shins at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington and for the few in the audience not aggravatingly lost in the wonder of their own cell phones, the set delivered, in equal shares, treats and drawbacks. Picked up "Wincing the Night Away" in the lobby before the show (nice to see vinyl and CD offered) and I found the record pretty much like the show.
