Overview Edit

Room on Fire is the second studio album by American Garage Rock Revival band The Strokes. Released in October 2003, it follows 2001's Is This It and includes three singles: "12:51", "Reptilia", and "The End Has No End". Grammy-winning producer Nigel Godrich was initially in charge of production, but The Strokes felt he made the songs seem "soulless". The band went back to work with Is This It producer Gordon Raphael. The album title Room on Fire was drawn from a line in "Reptilia": "The room is on fire as she's fixing her hair". The record received positive reviews upon release. It reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and debuted at number four in the U.S. on the Billboard 200, where it went on to sell 597,000 units by October 2006 and was certified Gold.

5 stars No sophomore jinx for these guys
Look, I saw Television live in the seventies (as well as the nineties and in 2001), caught Iggy Pop, the Buzzcocks, the Feelies, Eleventh Dream Day, the Mekons, the Replacements, the Pixies, the dB's, Pere Ubu, Yo La Tenga, and a host of other indie, alternative, and punk acts at their peak. Although I didn't catch them live, I discovered Big Star a lot earlier than most, and the same with Richard Thompson (who I have seen often in the past twenty years). I think my indie credibility is intact. …

The same people that attempt to slice apart the Strokes by virtue of their 'unworthy' comparisons are the same individuals that are destroying rock and roll. Christ, the Strokes are rock and roll. When was the last time anyone heard anything so immediately accessible but also so intricately crafted and subtle? It's really simple. Either you like the music, or you don't. It's not incredibly important whether they sound like Television or the Stooges, or whatever. Who cares. How many people refuse…
