Biography

Edit

The Verve formed in Wigan, near Manchester, England in 1989, and were signed to Hut Records two years later. With a sound combining psychedelic instruments and shoegaze haziness, their early singles created a little buzz on the indie-rock scene without leading to mainstream success. Debut album A Storm In Heaven only reached No.23 in the UK album charts, but it was widely praised by critics.

For follow-up A Northern Soul, the band ditched their psychedelic swirling in favour of a Britpop and ecstasy-influenced sound. The album only did slightly better in the charts and was met with mixed reviews by critics - but it has since been listed by several magazines as one of the best British albums of the era.

The Verve made their commercial breakthrough with third album Urban Hymns (1997). First single "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was a worldwide smash hit, but the band didn't make a penny from it because it relied on a Rolling Stones-owned sample for the orchestral hook. Second single "The Drugs Don't Work" went to No.1, and two more singles charted too. It was voted Album of the Year by Melody Maker and has gone on to sell over five-million copies worldwide.

In April 1999, the band split up, but they made a surprise reunion in 2007. Their first reunion concert was in San Francisco, followed by a larger show at the Coachella Music Festival. In 2008 they released a fourth album, eleven years after their third, imaginatively titled Forth.

The Verve

Aug, 12 2009

Britpop band The Verve have broken up, for the third time. Earlier this summer, guitarist Nick McCabe wrote on his MySpace "The Verve seem to be on holiday and show no sign of not being on holiday," and now a report in UK tabloid The Sunday Mirror has reinforced the point. According to the newspaper, frontman Richard Ashcroft hasn't spoken to McCabe or bassist Simon Jones in almost a year. "As far as Nick and Simon are concerned the Verve no longer exists," a source said. "They think Richard was just using the reunion as a vehicle to get his solo career on track." In the meantime, McCabe and Jones aren't hanging by their telephones: they've formed a new band, The Black Ships, with Goldfrapp's Davidé Rossi, and Mig Shillace. McCabe says The Black Ships will consist of "krautrock-style excursions ... and maybe, just maybe, the killer pop record we're toying with making."

The Verve

Sep, 2 2008

This week the British album charts were visited by a few old friends. After an 11 year gap, The Verve finally released a new album which made a gratifying leap to the top of the charts. The chart performance of Forth equals the success of their 1997 landmark Urban Hymns and scotches rumours of the band’s demise as a force to be reckoned with. Not far behind The Verve sits Eva Cassidy with yet another posthumous album Somewhere, and nestling in the Top 5 alongside her is 50th birthday boy Michael Jackson with the King of Pop compilation. It would seem that the onset of autumn has made the British public reach for the comfort of a little nostalgia.
