They Might Be Giants are an alternative pop/rock duo formed in 1982 by John Linnell and John Flansburgh. The band are most renowned for their hit single "Birdhouse in Your Soul". Linnell and Flansburgh attended high school together in Lincoln, Mass., but after graduation they went their separate ways, forming the band after meeting up again in New York.
They released their debut album They Might Be Giants in 1986, which became popular on college radio and helped by the video for one of the tracks "Don't Let's Start". The bands' 1989 Flood album brought them to the world's attention with the quirky single "Birdhouse in your Soul". Although not typical of the bands' work, the single struck a chord with record buyers and follow-up releases "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and "Particle Man", propelled the album to gold sales.
The release of their Apollo 18album in 1992 saw a change in style towards a rockier sound, which would be carried on with subsequent albums. The move was popular with their hardcore fans although they failed to re-capture the public imagination as they had with Flood.
The bands' music has been used by other media, they composed the song "Dr. Evil" for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, performed the theme music for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and their track "You're Not the Boss of Me" from US TV series Malcolm in the Middle won the band a Grammy award in 2002.
The band released their twelfth studio album The Else in 2007.
