Biography

Edit

Thom Yorke is the lead singer for English rock band Radiohead. Forming in Oxford in 1991, the band achieved fame for the alternative-rock anthem "Creep" in 1993. Their second album The Bends (1995) was widely praised by critics and became a favourite among fans of college rock. Third album OK Computer (1997) was a phenomenal success, universally pleasing rock journalists. It became so widely acclaimed that many claimed it was the best record of the decade, and one of the best rock albums ever.

After that success, the band took a step to the left with Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001), which were again praised by most fans and writers, although some fans were disappointed that the band had moved away from their original rock sound. Yorke, a driving force behind their experimental tendencies, released his first solo album in 2006. The Eraser was an electronic album that was met with mostly positive reviews.

In 2007, Radiohead released their seventh album as a group, In Rainbows, amidst much coverage for the innovative way in which it was sold: as an online download, with the purchaser choosing how much they wanted to pay for it. Again, it was met with much praise from fans and writers alike.

Apart from his music, Yorke is also known for his political views, and has spoken out in support of Amnesty International, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and Friends of the Earth, among others.

Thom Yorke Contributes Silence To Charity Single

Oct, 20 2010

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke is known for his distinctive voice, including a keen falsetto, but he's refusing to lend it to the latest charity single he's supporting. Why? Because "2 Minute Silence" is just as it says: a single with no sound. The single is being released on November 7, when British troops of past wars are traditionally remembered. Director General of the Royal British Legion, Chris Simpkins, said “Rather than record a song, we felt the UK public would recognize the poignancy of silence and its clear association with remembrance.” Other artists who won't be contributing anything to the single include Roxy Music star Bryan Ferry and hip producer Mark Ronson. All that the three musicians are contributing is their names, which encourages websites which otherwise have no link to the charity to publicize the event. And it works!
