As early exponents of horrorcore, Three 6 Mafia have been accused of relating their name to the number of the beast, though the accusation of Satan-worship is something that band members have always disputed.
American hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia were formed in 1991 by DJ Paul, Lord Infamous and Juicy J, later joined by Koopsta Knicca, Gangsta Boo and Crunchy Black.
Their debut album, Mystic Stylez (1995), contained references to Satan which prevented them attaining much radio airplay and thus hindered sales of the album. The band toned down devil-worship references and moved from horrorcore to more mainstream hip-hop for subsequent releases. This paid off for them when the When the Smoke Clears (2000) album made it into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts, helped by "Sippin' on Some Syrup", while Most Known Unknown (2005) went on to platinum sales.
Their other ventures include establishing the record label Hypnotize Minds for their own and other releases, which has helped artists including Project Pat and The Kaze to get their tracks heard.
The band received recognition from the Academy for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" when it received the Oscar for Best Original Song; the track was included in the film The Hustle & Flow. They also had "It's a Fight" included in the film Rocky Balboa. The band were featured on the reality TV show Adventures in Hollywood which looked at their pursuit of fame.
