Thrice are a Californian band formed in 1998. The band are known for their musicianship and over their career they have moved from post-hardcore into alternative and experimental forms of rock.
Thrice was formed by school friends who worked at touring and writing and went to the studio for their self released debut in 2000, Identity Crisis. The album was picked up by Sub City who signed the band and re-issued the album. They embarked on a tour with other bands, including Simian, to help build their fanbase. The touring worked and their follow-up The Illusion of Safety made the Top 20 of the Heatseekers and Top Independent charts.
More touring brought Thrice to the attention of Island records, who signed the band for their next album. With a bigger budget behind them, The Artist in the Ambulance made the Top 20 on The Billboard 200. They matched this with their follow-up Vheissu in 2005, but left Island after its release.
The band moved towards experimental music, with their four part, elements-inspired, albums for their new label Vagrant Records. The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II entered the Billboard 200 in the Top 30, and its companion, ….Vols. III & IV, is due for release in 2008.
