Biography

Edit

Trance DJ and producer Tiësto was born Tijs Verwest in Holland in 1969. As Tiësto he has released trance albums and remixes and also has a long list of pseudonyms, including Tom Ace, Passenger and Da Joker, under which he has produced music in a variety of styles.

He began his career DJing at school parties and went on to hone his skills as a resident DJ in nightclubs. During this time he was producing gabber-techno tracks under the name Da Joker. In 1997 Tiësto co-founded the record label Black Hole Recordings through which he would release tracks under his various guises. As his success as a DJ grew he graduated to lengthy solo sets culminating in the Tiësto in Concert gigs where he played to thousands of fans at events held in sports stadia in Holland. Eventually his fame grew such that he could take this format to the US.

He released his debut album In My Memory in 2001. Although it made the Top 30 in Holland, subsequent releases Just Be and Parade of Athletes (both 2004) achieved more widespread recognition. His 2007 release Elements of Life was his most successful to date, including the track "Dance4life" which is named after an HIV/AIDS charity he supports.

Tiësto was the first ever DJ to be invited to play at an Olympic opening ceremony, playing at the 2004 Olympics in Greece. He currently presents a Dutch radio show called Tiësto's Club Life, which was picked up by US station XM Satellite Radio. He has a string of international awards to his credit for both his original work and also for his work as a remixer.

2011 SoundUnwound / Chordstrike Music Festival Guide

Mar, 18 2011

There are few things we adore more than going to music festivals. It doesn’t get any better than being outdoors and wandering between stages, discovering new bands and watching other people doing the same thing. Hopefully you guys feel the same way, so we’ve included details about 40 events (so far), like the line-up, video of past events, a description of what to expect, and social networking links so you can follow developments. Check out the events we’ve written up here. Sure, we wrote about the big events like Bonnaroo, New Orleans’ JazzFest, and Lollapalooza, but we also have written up info on lesser-known events in the US and worldwide. Did you know that Morocco hosts a killer festival each year? We hadn’t heard about the Gnawa and World Music Festival, but were thrilled to learn about it and now we want to go! We’ve always wanted to go to England’s motherlode, the Glastonbury Festival and Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, and not just because we took four years of Danish in college. The European festivals go off!! And the more we learned about Miami’s electronic free for all, the Ultra Music Festival, the more we feel like checking that out. But we’d be happy to get that vibe at Elecric Forest or Seattle’s Decibel Festival. One of our favorite year after year is High Sierra and we hotfoot it to the Gorge each year for Sasquatch, too!! But we can’t wait to hear from you guys. What are your favorite events? Why? Check out the Festival Guide and leave your comments! -Court
