Biography

Edit

Timothy Mosley is better known as the hip-hop producer and rapper Timbaland. Over the last decade he has been hugely influential on the sound of current pop music, because his own distinctive style has been so popular and produced a string of hits.

Timbaland emerged in 1996 as the producer of two critically acclaimed and successful albums: Ginuwine's Ginuwine...the Batchelor and Aaliyah's One in a Million, which he co-wrote with Missy Elliot. Both showcased Timbaland's focus on minimal electronic rhythms, rather than hip-hop's prevailing focus on a sound filled with soul samples. He went on to produce albums with a similar sound for Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Destiny's Child, Nas and others, as well as releasing two albums himself: Welcome to our World (1997, with Magoo) and Tim's Bio: Life from the Bassment (1998).

In the new millennium, Timbaland continued to write and produce songs and albums for other artists, including Ludacris, Beck, Petey Pablo, Bubba Sparxxx, Brandy and LL Cool J. He helped former boy-band star Justin Timberlake with debut album Justified, including co-writing and producing the international hit "Cry Me A River". Timberlake's second album was also co-written and produced by Timbaland, including the hits "Sexyback", "My Love" and "What Goes Around... Comes Around". Meanwhile, Timbaland resurrected the career of Nelly Furtado by signing her to his label Mosley Music and producing her album Loose, which included the massive hit singles "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "All Good Things (Come To An End)" and "Say It Right".

In 2007, Timbaland collaborated with Bjork, 50 Cent, Madonna and M.I.A..

Timbaland Is "Done With Hip-Hop"

Dec, 17 2009

He last said he was quitting in 2007, but he couldn’t help himself: “Music is boring right now” Timbaland said two years ago, “I’m too innovative for the world. I've been doing it so long, I'm about to throw in the towel,” he continued, before producing records for Flo Rida, Jamie Foxx, Keri Hilson, Jay-Z and others. Hard on the heels of the recent release of Shock Value 2, Timbaland has announced that he’s quitting hip-hop all over again. Some had foreseen this move when his latest release found him working with Chad Kroeger and Miley Cyrus, rather than the rappers of his past, but in a recent interview with MTV, Timbaland revealed that he’d been engaging in a little market research. "After my last album, I know where my bread and butter is at… It's the women who watch Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives… It lets me know that my fanbase is mostly women and they are from all cultures. So it's not a person who loves mostly hip-hop. It's a person who loves everything besides hip-hop. I was done with hip-hop a long time ago. Once my generation left, I left. I do it, but there's nobody from my generation besides Jay who's doing it… It's just not the same.” Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreak was a wallowing synth-pop record, and Lil Wayne is about to launch his rock career: there seems to be room for a new star in hip-hop, but who will make the leap?
