Timbaland Is "Done With Hip-Hop"
Dec, 17 2009
He last said he was quitting in 2007, but he couldn’t help himself: “Music is boring right now” Timbaland said two years ago, “I’m too innovative for the world. I've been doing it so long, I'm about to throw in the towel,” he continued, before producing records for Flo Rida, Jamie Foxx, Keri Hilson, Jay-Z and others. Hard on the heels of the recent release of Shock Value 2, Timbaland has announced that he’s quitting hip-hop all over again.
Some had foreseen this move when his latest release found him working with Chad Kroeger and Miley Cyrus, rather than the rappers of his past, but in a recent interview with MTV, Timbaland revealed that he’d been engaging in a little market research. "After my last album, I know where my bread and butter is at… It's the women who watch Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives… It lets me know that my fanbase is mostly women and they are from all cultures. So it's not a person who loves mostly hip-hop. It's a person who loves everything besides hip-hop. I was done with hip-hop a long time ago. Once my generation left, I left. I do it, but there's nobody from my generation besides Jay who's doing it… It's just not the same.”
Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreak was a wallowing synth-pop record, and Lil Wayne is about to launch his rock career: there seems to be room for a new star in hip-hop, but who will make the leap?
