Anna Mae Bullock was born in Tennessee, but moved to St. Louis as a teenager. There she met rock and roll performer Ike Turner and persuaded him to let her join his backing vocalists. Eventually Anna impressed Ike so much that he gave her equal-billing, and the new name "Tina". They became the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, and married in 1962. Through the 60s they forged a reputation as a thrilling live act, with Tina's dancing playing a key part in the show, and they enjoyed several hits such as "River Deep, Mountain High" and "Proud Mary". But towards the end of the decade and into the 70s, Ike's drug abuse worsened, and he began abusing his wife and performing partner. Their marriage and the act descended into disarray, before Tina finally left in the mid-70s.

Her solo career got off to a poor start. She had already recorded two solo albums under Ike's guidance, which had got her nowhere, and her first two records post-Ike were also mostly ignored. She had massive debts and it seemed like her career had stalled, but in 1983 a cover version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" broke the Top 10 in the UK, and did fairly well in the Hot 100 too. This prompted her record label to give her one last chance for a new album, and Tina made it count. Private Dancer (1984) was a runaway success, selling over 11 million copies, boosted by the No.1 single "What's Love Got To Do With It?", as well as "Better Be Good To Me" and "Private Dancer", which were both Top 10 hits. She won four Grammy's at the 1985 ceremony for the songs on this album.

Her huge success continued through the late 80s and early 90s. "We Don't Need Another Hero", her theme for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (which she also starred in), was another huge hit in 1985. The following year she released the multi-platinum Break Every Rule, which included "Typical Male" and the Grammy-winning "Back Where You Started". She also performed in front of a crowd of 184,000 in Rio de Janeiro, a world record paying attendance. Foreign Affair followed in 1989 and was another phenomenal success, selling around 9 million copies and including smash hit singles like "Steamy Windows" and "The Best". The latter became a popular song for sports teams and athletes worldwide, as well as being featured in various adverts.

In 1993, Tina's autobiography I, Tina was turned into a film, called What's Love Got To Do With It?. It detailed her difficulties with Ike and the breakdown of their marriage, but remained controversial among supporters of Ike who claimed that scenes were exaggerated or unfair. The film was nominated for two Oscars, and Angela Bassett won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Tina. Two years later she had another big hit when she recorded the theme to the James Bond film Goldeneye. Though Tina initially gave up large-scale touring after a record-breaking round of shows in 2000, she has recently announced plans to undertake a new tour in October 2008.

Encouraged by her stunning duet performance with Beyonce at February's Grammy ceremony, 68 year old Tina Turner has decided to hit the road again for the first time since 2000. She told CBS's The Early Show that she had been bombarded with requests to perform live again, and that friend Sophia Loren also advised her to get back on-stage. Tina's tour starts on October 1st in Kansas City, before winding its way to sixteen more cities across North America, culminating in Montreal on December 8th.

Farewell tours just ain't what they used to be. Like many artists before her, it seems Tina Turner is taking to the stage again in spite of having ‘retired’ in 2000 after the multi-million grossing Twenty Four Seven World Tour. The 2008 tour kicks off in Kansas City in October and excited fans will be jamming the lines on May 12 when tickets are expected to go on sale.
