Biography

Edit

Toby Keith Covel is an American country music singer-songwriter born in 1961. His fame was assured with the release of the patriotic "boot in the ass" song -- "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)" (2001) -- whose inflammatory lyrics sparked a media scrum. However, he had been recording songs for almost a decade prior to this episode.

Toby Keith initially earned his living in the Oklahoma oil fields, playing in the Easy Money Band in his spare time. When the oil industry suffered a downturn he turned to football for a while, but after two years he decided to make music his focus. By 1993 he had released his major label debut Toby Keith and struck success immediately with the hit singles "Should've Been a Cowboy", "A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action" and "He Ain't Worth Missing". Virtually all of his subsequent albums continued the platinum selling streak, with his latter albums from 2001 onwards hitting the Top 10 in both the country music and main Billboard charts.

His most recent albums have been Big Dog Daddy and the Yuletide flavoured A Classic Christmas, both released in 2007.

In the News

Keith Replaces Kenny At No.1

Oct, 14 2010

The good news for Toby Keith is: he's No.1 on the Billboard 200, with a record-breaking debut week for fifteenth studio album Bullets in the Gun! The bad news -- which he'll surely get over -- is that the record he broke was for the lowest-selling debut-week No.1 since accurate records began (1991, when Nielsen Soundscan computerized their counting methods). It only took 71,000 quick-purchasing fans to get Bullets in the Gun to top spot. That's not the lowest-selling No.1 ever: in its eighth week of release, just 60,000 sales of Justin Bieber's My World 2.0 was enough for it to top the chart. By comparison, Keith's fourteenth album, American Ride, sold 90,000 in its debut week just a year ago, and only hit No.3. Last week's No.1, fellow country superstar Kenny Chesney, drops to No.2 with 65,000 second-week sales of Hemingway's Whiskey, while Hot 100 chart-topper Bruno Mars debuts at No.3 with his first album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, thanks to 55,000 sales.
