Thomas Baptiste "Tom" Morello (born May 30, 1964) is a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist best known for his tenure with the bands Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, his acoustic solo act The Nightwatchman, and his newest group, Street Sweeper Social Club. He is best-known for his use of guitar effects, his innovative guitar solos, his use of tapping, and his heavy-riffs. He was featured as one of the guitarists in Rolling Stone's "The Top 20 New Guitarists" article and was ranked #26 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

  • His father was a guerilla in the Mau-Mau uprising that freed Kenya from British rule. Morello’s great-uncle, Jomo Kenyatta, was the first elected president in Kenya.
  • Morello is famed for his guitar style, which consists of punk/funk hybrid riffs and hip hop-inspired sounds. His guitar playing is also characterized by heavy use of guitar effects, such as delay, modulation, harmonizers, distortion, pitch shifters, feedback, and others in unique ways and combinations.
  • After graduating from Harvard in 1986 with a BA Degree, with Honours, in Political Science, he worked in Senator Alan Cranston’s office before pursuing music as a career.
  • He has also co-founded the non-profit political group Axis of Justice with Serj Tankian of System of a Down.
  • Tirelessly continues his political activism during Audioslave's off time through the non-profit organisation he co-founded Axis of Justice which focuses on issues of peace, human rights, and economic justice.
  • His mother, Mary, started Parents for Rock and Rap, an organization against censorship in music.
