Biography

Edit

Tom Petty is an award-winning American singer-songwriter born in 1950. For most of his career he has been supported by the Heartbreakers, and though he has released the occasional solo album without them they have always supported him on his tours. The current Heartbreakers are Mike Campbell, Scott Thurston, Ron Blair, Benmont Tench and Steve Ferrone.

Inspired by Elvis Presley, Petty’s first induction into the musical world was in the bands The Sundowners, The Epics and Mudcrutch, but by 1976 he had released his debut album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The album was a slow burner in the US but enjoyed immediate success in the UK. The follow-up You’re Gonna Get It! (1978) went gold, but a record label dispute led to him being declared bankrupt in 1979. Once the dispute was resolved, Petty released Damn the Torpedoes (1979) which proved to be the next in a long line of successful albums. During the late 80s and early 90s Petty was involved in the shortlived band The Traveling Wilburys, releasing two albums, The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 (1988) and The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 (1990).

The most recent release for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was The Last DJ in 2002, and the most recent solo release was 2006’s Highway Companion.
