Stranger Than Fiction Friday: Tommy Lee
Dec, 10 2010
Tommy Lee, drummer for Mötley Crüe and animal rights activist, is demanding that SeaWorld cease some rather unsavory and dangerous practices regarding Tilikum, the Orlando theme park’s bull Orca whale. The rocker calls their activities “sick and twisted” in a letter he wrote to the amusement park’s President. And anyone who has read “The Dirt”, the Crüe’s jaw-dropping autobiography, can affirm Lee knows a thing or two about ‘sick and twisted.’ Read his letter to Sea World here.
A rep from SeaWorld responded to Lee’s allegations, "Contrary to the charges made by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and repeated in Lee’s letter, our trainers do not now nor have they ever entered the water with Tilikum for this purpose… Mr. Lee would be wise to spend more time checking his facts.”
The story doesn’t end there. Lee has now suggested in a second letter that he and PETA visit SeaWorld and video tape the process, then let the public decide. Read Lee's second letter here.
Tilikum has killed three people since his capture off Iceland in the 1980s, including his trainer in 2010. SeaWorld claims humans no longer have contact with him, but if you believe Lee, there’s something fishy going on.
