Biography

Edit

The pain in Toni Braxton's voice when she sang what seemed, in the early 90s, like the most popular song ever to hit the airwaves - "Unbreak My Heart" -- fell hard on the ears of R&B fans, and it fuelled a wave of hits that locked up her reputation as a from-the-gut vocal phenomenon. Through "Another Sad Love Song", "Breathe Again" and other wrenching tunes, Braxton did for ballads what Tina Turner did decades earlier with her best-loved soul numbers -- she rubbed them raw, laying bare the riptides of feeling below. Later singles haven't charted as sure-footedly as the instant-hit early ones, but Braxton's brilliance behind a microphone remains untouched.

Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton? Or not? When the singer took to the stage at a Toni Braxton concert in Paramaribo, Suriname, the unappreciative audience saw fit to jeer and pelt her with bottles. But the singer in question was not the Toni Braxton the crowd had paid to see, it was Trina Johnson-Finn, Toni Braxton impersonator. Disappointed gig goers had paid up to $53 a ticket for the pleasure of seeing somebody who turned out to be a ‘Phony Toni’ and they were justifiably annoyed. Trina was arrested, but at her recent trial her concert promoter, Angel Ventura, assured the court that Trina knew nothing of the deception. Johnson-Finn’s lawyer said of the arrangement, "Ventura told her to go all out as an impersonator and play a role in the whole thing. She thought that everyone knew that she was just an impersonator, but Ventura did not tell anyone in Suriname." The unlucky Johnson-Finn has already spent 3 months in jail awaiting trial, and may face sentencing if the courts fail to believe that she was not party to the deception.
