TOWA TEI has been producing music, releasing albums and tracks, and DJing internationally non-stop. In 2009, his 5th. original album BIG FUN was released in Japan and on iTunes internationally. His career as a music producer involves producing music for other artists, sound-making for TV commercials, and movie soundtracks as well. The year 2010 will be the 20th anniversary for his music career.

TOWA TEI debuted as a member of Deee-Lite from U.S. label Elektra Records in 1990, and solo debuted with the album Future Listening! in 1994. He moved to New York City in the late 1980s to proceed his studies in art school, but soon became involved in the New York City club scene. He first earned notice for his remix work on tracks from the Jungle Brothers' 1989 LP Done by the Forces of Nature. In 1990, he (known as Jungle DJ Towa-Towa) shot to fame as a member of the downtown New York club trio Deee-Lite, who scored an international hit with "Groove Is In the Heart."

In 1991, TOWA TEI and Super DJ Dmitri collaborated with Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto on the song "Rap the World." After two albums, 1990's World Clique and 1992's Infinity Within, TOWA TEI left Deee-Lite to begin working on solo projects; his debut album, Future Listening! a montage of bossa nova, jazz, and electronic dance music, appeared in 1995. His second album was 1998's Sound Museum. On it, he collaborated with Kylie Minogue on the track "GBI: German Bold Italic," which reached number 20 in Japan and number 63 in the UK. Bebel Gilberto also did vocals for the album. This was followed by the album Last Century Modern in 1999. In 2005, Towa Tei released a new album titled Flash and a new single with Minogue, "Sometime Samurai", which reached number six in Japan. In 2009, his long-awaited 5th solo album BIG FUN was released in Japan and on iTunes internationally.

As a DJ, he has been actively DJing at clubs, festivals, and corporation parties. At the same time he travels around Japan and other countries to DJ, his regular party "MOTIVATION" held at major cities in Japan, Tokyo and Kyoto, has been successfully attracting a huge crowd of club goers and music fans. His new concept party "HOTEL H" started in 2009 is already becoming a new social spot for industry people in the city of Tokyo as well.
