Tracey Thorn is perhaps best known as one half of the duo Everything But The Girl but she has also found success as an artist in her own right.
Her own career began with her involvement in the Marine Girls, who released two albums in the early 80s. In 1981 Thorn left her home town of Hatfield and went to study at Hull University, and it was there that she developed a working relationship – which eventually resulted in marriage -- with Ben Watt as Everything But The Girl. Her involvement in the Marine Girls eventually withered as she concentrated on the new musical venture. Everything But The Girl enjoyed success through the 80s and 90s including an international hit with the track “Missing”, although, by 2002, the pair declared an extended hiatus so that they could both pursue solo projects and, for Thorn, dedicate some time to motherhood.
Thorn was not a stranger to solo projects. In 1982 she had released A Distant Shore which had achieved a certain underground success. Nonetheless most of her solo endeavors were collaborative and she was able to work with many other artists including Massive Attack, The Style Council and Adam F. Her second solo album appeared in2007, with the release of Out of the Woods, which met with measured critical praise and a No.38 slot on the UK album charts.
