A short-lived supergroup containing Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburys released one critically acclaimed album, before the death of Orbison, and then another album two years later.
Several of the members agreed to collaborate during dinner one evening, and recorded Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 over 10 days. It spent over a year in the American album charts, and was eventually certified double platinum - the first album featuring Bob Dylan to do so. Shortly afterwards, Roy Orbison died of a sudden heart attack, and many presumed the group would record no more. Two years later they made a surprise comeback with Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3. It wasn’t quite so well received, but still achieved platinum sales in the US.
After being out of print for several years, both Traveling Wilburys albums were re-packaged and re-released in 2007 as The Traveling Wilburys Collection, with bonus tracks and a DVD. This new release was a huge success, topping the album charts in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.
