Overview Edit

12 Memories is the fourth studio album by the Scottish indie rock band Travis, first released in 2003. It is a much more mature and lyrically darker album and focuses on issues such as the 2003 Iraq invasion, politicians, psychological crisis and domestic abuse. Musically, 12 Memories has embraced use of distorted guitars and a more electronic, rockier and even trip-hop style; "Happy to Hang Around" is the most obvious example of this change. It opened to rather mixed reviews by music critics. Three singles were released from the album. The first, "Re-offender", reached number 7 in the UK chart and was about domestic abuse. The second single, "The Beautiful Occupation", was inspired by the occupation of Iraq by US and coalition forces in 2003. The final single, "Love Will Come Through", was a more classic Travis song and was featured in a marketing campaign by the Post Office. The end vocals for "Peace the Fuck Out" were provided by supporters of Celtic F.C. and Fulham F.C.

The album entered the UK charts at a relatively disappointing #3 and failed to sell enough over-the-counter copies to go 1× platinum, even though enough copies were shipped to make it be certified in this way. This was a massive come-down for the band in comparison to the 10× and 4× platinum sales of the previous two albums. "The Beautiful Occupation" was their first single to miss the top 40, charting at #48, though the following single, the fan favourite "Love Will Come Through", fared slightly better, charting at #28.

4 stars Evolution, my boys, evolution
It's quite clear that Travis are evolving as a band. One could see that from their first three albums, but with their fourth disc, it becomes undeniable. Some may quickly write this album off because it isn't as radio friendly as TIB. Well, my friends, TIB didn't have any material nearly as 'in-depth' as some of these songs. Fran and the boys have not written a song as intensely poetic as 'Walking Down This Hill' in a long, long time. 'Happy to Hang Around' rocks out, especially during their liv…

3 stars Very solid effort...wish there was a 3.5 star rating.
First, a word about the star number. There is a fair bit of "grade inflation" on most websites. In my opinion, a four star album would be something like The Joshua Tree and five stars would be reserved for albums like the Beatles' Revolver or The White Album. So three stars is, in my ratings universe, an excellent album.

The new Travis album, 12 Memories, is a 3.5 star effort. The songs are "darker" than their previous releases, but it's all relative: they are still very poppy even when the subj…
