Type O Negative are a goth/doom-metal band, the earliest incarnation of which was formed in New York in 1980, by Peter Steele who was joined by Josh Silver. Originally called Fallout, the band released an EP then split up. Steele went on to form Carnivore, a speed metal/hardcore fusion band who split after two albums.
After a break of two years Steele was cajoled out of retirement by drummer Sal Abruscato, who, along with Josh Silver and Kenny Hickey, briefly became Sub Zero, although on discovering that the name was already being used, opted for Type O Negative.
The band's debut album Slow, Deep and Hard was released in 1991. Touring Europe to promote the album brought the band into conflict with authorities over the ironic nature of the band's lyrics. They found themselves branded as racist and sympathetic to the Nazis, although this was somewhat to their bemusement, as Josh Silver is Jewish.
1993's Bloody Kisses took on board influences from The Beatles with the incorporation of psychedelia, and was a commercial and critical success, going platinum in the US and earning coverage on MTV and VH1. October Rust (1996) carried on this success, as it was certified gold in the US and entered the Top 50 of the Billboard 200, their first album to do so.
The new album in 2007 Dead Again saw the band successfully mix their previous influences, and the album made the Top 30 in the US. The band toured Europe to promote the album.
