Biography

Edit

Van Dyke Parks (born January 3, 1943) is an American composer, arranger, producer, musician, singer, and actor. He has worked with performers including Grace Kelly, The Beach Boys, U2, The Byrds, Loudon Wainwright III, Silverchair, Ry Cooder, Joanna Newsom, Brian Wilson, Inara George and Ringo Starr. In addition to various documentaries, a recent movie appearance was in the Chinatown sequel "The Two Jakes".

Moving to California from the south in 1955, Parks played coffeehouse guitar and attached himself to the Beat scene in L.A. before establishing himself as a multi-instrumentalist and poet among the intelligentia of Hollywood. Parks once remarked in a documentary that he turned down a membership in The Byrds, preferring to work behind the scenes rather than be a pop star "with a pageboy haircut".
