Biography

Edit

Velvet Revolver is best known as the supergroup that rose from the ashes of Guns N' Roses, numbering three former members of that band (Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum). They are joined by Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and Dave Kushner from Wasted Youth. The line-up was completed after a very public audition, televised as VH1 Inside Out: The Rise of Velvet Revolver, to find a vocalist (Weiland).

After recording the driving "Set Me Free" for The Hulk soundtrack the band set to recording their debut Contraband. It was a process which was complicated by Weiland's court appearances for drug charges and subsequent stint in rehab. The album was released in 2004 and debuted at No.1 on the Billboard charts. It has subsequently sold in excess of two million copies, due in part to the band's relentless touring schedule to promote it.

The second album Libertad was released in 2007 and debuted at No.5 on the Billboard 200 but by 2008, tensions between the erratic Weiland and the rest of the band were at an all-time high. He was fired in April 2008 and the long haul of finding a replacement began shortly after.

Velvet Revolver

Nov, 30 2008

The future of Velvet Revolver seems to be in doubt after they split from their record label RCA by mutual consent. The supergroup, which features former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, as well as ex-Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner, has been on hiatus since singer Scott Weiland quit in April. Weiland went on to reform the Stone Temple Pilots for a reunion tour, while the other Velvet Revolver guys tried and failed to find an adequate replacement singer. The split from RCA gives the band more time to replace Weiland. Velvet Revolver's latest album, Libertad (2007), wasn't nearly as successful as their previous, the debut Contraband (2004): Libertad took three months to sell what Contraband did in its first week. The uncertainty now surrounding Velvet Revolver coincides with the sudden revival of Guns N' Roses' fortunes, after Axl Rose finally got round to releasing Chinese Democracy, his first album of new material in seventeen years.

When you pick up the mic at karaoke, does the pub empty? No? Great - there may be a gig for you with Velvet Revolver. This month the band dispensed with the talented, but somewhat erratic Scott Weiland. It left them with a big space at the front of the stage which they need to fill, pronto. The search for Weiland was a VH1 televisual treat, the search for his replacement looks set to move to the internet, with the band announcing plans to undertake web auditions at some point in the near future. Meanwhile, Weiland has rekindled his on-off romance with Stone Temple Pilots. A tour and an album are both planned for 2008.

Trivia

Edit
  • The band were invited to tour with KISS, but declined after they heard 80s glam metal band Poison were also on the bill, hoping to avoid being pigeon-holed as a retro band.
