Wolfmother are a modern band who sound strangely old. Their music has all the hallmarks of classic 70s stoner rock. Critical comparisons are often made to their similarities with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, but there's enough of a new twist, a dash of White Stripes and an edgy delivery which tips its hat to a more modern day sound.
After jamming together for years, friends Andrew Stockdale (guitar, vocals), Chris Ross (bass, keyboards) and Myles Heskett (drums) recorded an eponymous EP in 2004 which was well enjoyed by critics and fans alike. They toured extensively to solidify the fanbase and, after decamping from Australia to LA, recorded and released the Wolfmother album in 2005.
The album and the tours won acclaim and awards aplenty (including a Grammy for the Best Hard Rock Performance) but with success all around them, the band split in 2008 amid claims of irreconcilable personal and creative differences.
Stockdale, the only remaining founder member, vowed to continue and in 2009 was joined by new band members, Ian Peres (bass, keyboards), guitarist Aidan Nemeth (guitar) and Dave Atkins (drums).
