The musician and composer Yoko Kanno was born in Japan in 1964 and is best known for her work on the soundtracks of Japanese live action and anime films. Her prolific career has also involved playing in bands and writing music for computer games and TV adverts.
She made her debut as the keyboardist for the band Tetsu 100% who released their first album Tokyo Taco Blues in 1986, this was also the year that Kanno's music was first used in a computer game The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In addition to Tetsu 100% she was also in Samply Red and The Seatbelts and in 1998 she released a solo album called Song To Fly. Kanno has also composed music for Jpop artists including Maaya Sakamoto and Kyoko Koizumi.
Kanno has worked on anime films including Ghost in the Shell and Please Save My Earth, and her work for live action films includes Yamato Takeru and Kamikaze Girls. She has also found time to write music for TV adverts for Canon, Xerox and Microsoft amongst others
