Biography

Edit

York is a German electronical music duo founded in 1997 by musicians and brothers Torsten and Jörg Stenzel. Producing Trance, Downtempo and House their productions are know for catchy guitar hooks and delicate dance textures.

Torsten Stenzel began his musical career early in his childhood, learning the piano from the tender age of 5 when he began his classical training. Until the age of 18 classical music and theory were his life.

In the early 90's his orientation changed and he discovered the rapidly growing techno/house movement. Little by little he put together his own studio and combined parts of his own musical production skills under the broad control of classical theory.

Outside York Torsten Stenzel has worked with the likes of Tina Turner, Jennifer Paige, All Saints, Moby, Tarja Turunen, Faithless, Vanessa Mae, Chris Rea, Rick Nowels, Rob Davis and Nadja Benaissa.

Torsten is credited for several Gold & Platinum awards, the 'Echo' Nomination and 3 million sold records.

Jörg Stenzel has since the age of 11 been interested in stringed instruments, the guitar in particular, and characteristic of great guitarists such as Hendrix and Santana.

He has become an outstanding contributor in the studio, and in 1997, while he was busy with ideas to combine guitar anthems with current house and trance grooves, Torsten joined him with his own ideas and 'YORK' was born.

Jörg's very talented guitar skills are still today widly respected within the dance scene. Furthermore considered the key elements of several 'York' productions.

York released three singles, the first of which, The Awakening, reached #11 in the UK Singles Chart in October 1999. With 250,000 copies shifted it is one of the biggest selling records in the UK not to make the Top 10! Their second single On The Beach/Reachers of Civilisation (the former, sampling Chris Rea's On The Beach) was their biggest hit, making #4 in June 2000 and selling 200,000 copies. The next chart entry Farewell To The Moon crept into the Top 40 at #37 in November later that year. Their last UK hit single was Fields Of Love which featured club legend ATB. It reached #16 in January 2001.

York joined their new label Offshore Music (based in Switzerland) in 2004 with their club hit singles "Iceflowers" (playlisted by Judge Jules or Paul van Dyk) and "Mercury Rising". Their album "Peace" was released by EMI Music Switzerland.
