Music Should Never Be Torture

Nearly 20 prominent musicians have lent their support to the newly formed Close Gitmo Now campaign which seeks to bring pressure on the American government to close the controversial detention camp at Guantanamo. It emerged some time ago that ‘music torture’ is a commonly used technique and artists including Britney Spears, Don McLean and Prince were no doubt dismayed to learn that their creativity was being used to such negative effect. In all, the fact that their works have been so misused has galvanized some of the musicians in a cohesive bid to support the broader aim of closing the camp for good. As Tom Morello states in his comments on the Close Gitmo Now website: “the fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me – we need to end torture and close Guantanamo now." Rosanne Cash goes even further in her support for the campaign, and in her rallying call to arms said “I think every musician should be involved. It seems so obvious. Music should never be used as torture. It's beyond the pale. It's hard to even think about.”
