English funk-pop band Jamiroquai are fronted by singer Jay Kay, a groovy cat with groovy hats who’s loved and loathed in equal measure. He formed the band in 1992 and remains the sole permanent member; although some people perceive Jamiroquai as Jay Kay’s pseudonym, it is actually a full band with other members.
Jamiroquai have achieved four No.1 albums in the UK, beginning with their 1993 debut Emergency on Planet Earth. The Return of the Space Cowboy (1994) hit No.2, as did their American breakthrough Travelling Without Moving (1996). “Virtual Insanity” became their biggest UK hit yet (reaching No.3), and featured a video that brought international acclaim - at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards it received ten nominations, winning four awards. “Cosmic Girl” and “Alright” were also hits.
In 1998, Jamiroquai achieved their first and only UK No.1 with a song from the Godzilla movie soundtrack, “Deeper Underground”. Fourth album Synkronized (1999) topped the UK charts and featured two more hit singles, “Canned Heat” and “Supersonic”. A Funk Odyssey (2001) also topped the album chart, and “Little L” was a Top 5 hit. Jamiroquai’s latest hit was “Feels Just Like it Should”, from 2005’s Dynamite.
