by Ed @ SoundUnwound 1 March 2009Brooklyn duo MGMT made a big breakthrough last year, with three endlessly catchy singles and a unique fashion sense appealing to alternative pop fans and on-the-pulse European presidents alike. French première Nicolas Sarkozy's political party UMP used their third single "Kids" in meetings and on promotional videos, apparently without seeking permission first. It's a scenario reminiscent of the US presidential election campaign, when several acts had to publicly ask candidates to stop using their songs because they didn't agree with their policies. MGMT haven't elaborated on their opinions of French politics, but their French lawyer Isabelle Wekstein is demanding compensation for using the song anyway. UMP have apologized and offered a single Euro ($1.25) as a token settlement, but Wekstein isn't accepting that. "This offer is disrespectful of the rights of artists and authors," she said. "We are dealing with acts of counterfeiting, an infringement of intellectual property."
