Dante Terell Smith, known as Mos Def, is an American rapper and actor. His biggest musical successes were the album he made with Talib Kweli, Black Star (1998), and his debut solo album Black On Both Sides (1999). Both albums were critically acclaimed and together they established Mos Def as one of alternative hip-hop's biggest new stars. However, his second and third solo albums, The New Danger (2004) and True Magic (2006), were heavily criticised by reviewers. His music may have suffered because his attention had been drawn to acting, and in the time between Black On Both Sides and The New Danger Mos Def had pursued that instead. Before his music, a young Smith's biggest role had been as Bill Cosby's sidekick in The Cosby Mysteries. After Black On Both Sides, he played several roles on TV programs and in films such as Brown Sugar, The Italian Job and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
