(2 stories between 31st March 2009 and 7th December 2009)Nickelback: The Worst Band In The World?
by Ed @ SoundUnwound 7 December 2009Readers of British music magazine Word have unleashed their vitriol to name the artists they consider to be the worst in the world. Top of the hate list is the hugely popular yet much-derided Nickelback, who topped the list with almost 20 per cent of the vote. Though the remainder of the list was largely populated by a collection of Brit-centric bands, Maroon 5 was singled out for a spot at No.7 and shared company in the Top 10 with bands such as the largely forgotten Lighthouse Family, the over-hyped Londoners Razorlight and defunct Australian pop duo Savage Garden. The voting continued over at Twitter, where many chose to use the opportunity to grind personal axes by nominating popular mainstream bands like Coldplay and U2. Nobody was spared, as even The Beatles were awarded votes by two, presumably anonymous, voters. Music is a subject which unites people and divides opinions, as underlined by a poll that says a band with 30 million sales are worse than all others.
Permalink31st March 2009
by Ed @ SoundUnwound 31 March 2009In what wasn't as much of a surprise as their album title would suggest, Nickelback were the big winners at this weekend's Juno Awards, which seeks to honor the best music that Canada has to offer. They took home awards for Group Of The Year, the Juno Fan Choice Award, and the biggie - Album Of The Year - for their sixth studio album Dark Horse. Rapper Kardinal Offishall won Single Of The Year for his Akon collaboration "Dangerous," while singer-songwriter Sam Roberts bagged his fifth and sixth career Junos, for Artist Of The Year and Rock Album Of The Year (Love at the End of The World). The Stills won too, but their victory was a bit of a backhanded compliment: they won New Group Of The Year, thanks to the success of Oceans Will Rise, but it's their third album in a career stretching almost six years. Even if it has taken half a decade for the Juno judges to notice this hot "new" group, it's better late than never.
