by Ed @ SoundUnwound 3 June 2009On 29 May, legendary “Wall of Sound” music producer Phil Spector was sentenced after being found guilty of the murder of the 40 year old actress, Lana Clarkson. The presiding judge insisted that Spector serve at least 19 years before becoming eligible for parole, and this length of term will mean that the 69 year old is likely to spend the remainder of his life in jail. As Spector settles into routine behind locked doors, lawyers on both sides are posturing about the possibility of an appeal, with the defense asserting that the appeal will be extremely strong, and the prosecution stating that the case was rock solid and not subject to successful appeal. In the meantime, it briefly seemed that Spector was spending his time writing concise 140 character summaries of the last few traumatic days. “philspector” appeared on Twitter and his many followers were treated to snappy entries about his apparent experiences behind bars, ruminations about his hair, and his friendship with Wilson the cockroach. But the writer eventually admitted that the account was a joke, despite having fooled a few media outlets into believing him.

by Ed @ SoundUnwound 14 April 2009Legendary record producer Phil Spector has been convicted of the second degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson. The 40 year old woman was found dead in Spector's home foyer in February 2003, having suffered a single gun shot in the mouth. According to Spector's limo driver, who alerted the police, Spector emerged from the house and said "I think I killed somebody." A first trial was deadlocked in September 2007 when the jury failed to reach a conclusion, but the second trial concluded this week with a guilty verdict. The 69 year old now faces a minimum of 18 years in prison, with a life sentence also available to the judge who will decide a punishment on May 29. Spector was famed for pioneering the Wall Of Sound technique, most commonly associated with songs like "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by The Righteous Brothers. He also produced The Beatles' final album Let It Be, as well as solo albums by ex-Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison, and Leonard Cohen, the Ramones and others.
