Biography

Edit

English rock star Sting was the leader of The Police, who enjoyed a string of chart-topping singles in the early 80s and sold millions of records around the world. After disbanding the group, Sting went on to enjoy a successful solo career.

Sting was born Gordon Sumner in Newcastle, England, and came to fame in the late 70s as the lead singer, songwriter and bass player for seminal rock band The Police. After The Police released their monumental fifth album Synchronicity, the band went their separate ways and Sting released his first solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985). He would go on to release seven more solo albums in his career and become known for his environmental crusading. He also famously claimed to have tantric sex with his wife Trudie Styler, but more recently he has said that this was a joke that took on a life of its own.

A Stinging Attack On TV Talent Show Singers

by The Editors @ SoundUnwound
15 November 2009

The singer of The Police, Sting, has decried the British TV talent show The X-Factor, the Simon Cowell-led equivalent of American Idol. He told London’s Evening Standard newspaper that it was “televised karaoke” and that Cowell, who earned $75m last year, had “no recognizable talent apart from self-promotion.” Can we call that a “Stinging attack” on Cowell? “It is a soap opera which has nothing to do with music,” he said of the show which is currently in its sixth season, after replacing the original Pop Idol series. “In fact, it has put music back decades. Television is very cynical. They [the contestants] are either Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston or Boyzone and are not encouraged to create any real unique signature or fingerprint. The X Factor is a preposterous show.” Both “Fields of Gold,” which was a solo hit for Sting in 1993, and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” have been performed by X-Factor competitors. Its most successful winner, third season champion Leona Lewis, releases her second album Echo on Tuesday.
