Timothy Mosley is better known as the hip-hop producer and rapper Timbaland. Over the last decade he has been hugely influential on the sound of current pop music, because his own distinctive style has been so popular and produced a string of hits.
Timbaland emerged in 1996 as the producer of two critically acclaimed and successful albums: Ginuwine's Ginuwine...the Batchelor and Aaliyah's One in a Million, which he co-wrote with Missy Elliot. Both showcased Timbaland's focus on minimal electronic rhythms, rather than hip-hop's prevailing focus on a sound filled with soul samples. He went on to produce albums with a similar sound for Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Destiny's Child, Nas and others, as well as releasing two albums himself: Welcome to our World (1997, with Magoo) and Tim's Bio: Life from the Bassment (1998).
In the new millennium, Timbaland continued to write and produce songs and albums for other artists, including Ludacris, Beck, Petey Pablo, Bubba Sparxxx, Brandy and LL Cool J. He helped former boy-band star Justin Timberlake with debut album Justified, including co-writing and producing the international hit "Cry Me A River". Timberlake's second album was also co-written and produced by Timbaland, including the hits "Sexyback", "My Love" and "What Goes Around... Comes Around". Meanwhile, Timbaland resurrected the career of Nelly Furtado by signing her to his label Mosley Music and producing her album Loose, which included the massive hit singles "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "All Good Things (Come To An End)" and "Say It Right".
In 2007, Timbaland collaborated with Bjork, 50 Cent, Madonna and M.I.A..
