Profile Edit

Alan Menken is a multi-award winning film and theatrical composer and pianist, born in New York in 1949.

He made his theatrical debut with God Bless You, Mr Rosewater in 1979, although he had more success with the follow-up, Little Shop of Horrors. His score earned him an Academy Award nomination, and later was adapted for the film which starred Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.

He went on to have success as a lyricist, composer and director on works including King David, Sister Act the Musical (based on the Whoopi Goldberg film of the same name) and Beauty and the Beast, for which he received Tony and Drama Desk award nominations.

In addition to his work for the theatre, he has also composed music for major animated films including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, all of which have earned him Academy Awards.
