Maurice Jarre was the French born composer, best known for his film scores for Lawrence of Arabia, Dead Poets Society and Ghost.

He studied music composition at the Conservatoire in Paris, before moving on to the post of Musical Director at the French National Theatre. His career as a film score writer commenced in 1951, although he had his international breakthrough when he was asked to write the music for Lawrence of Arabia. The success of the film, in which music plays a strong part, earned Jarre an Oscar, and brought him international attention. He has since supplied the soundtracks for over 50 films. His list of credits also include Witness, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and Dr Zhivago. Dr Zhivago earned him another Oscar, and produced a gold-selling soundtrack album.

During his lifetime Maurice Jarre wrote some of the most memorable soundtracks for some of the most memorable movies of the 20th century, from the dystopia of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome to the emotion of Ghost. In all he scored over 150 movies, and in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the genre he was awarded his first Oscar for the score to Lawrence of Arabia, his second for Doctor Zhivago and his third for A Passage to India. "One could say my life itself has been one long soundtrack" he once said. "Music was my life, music brought me to life, and music is how I will be remembered long after I leave this life. When I die there will be a final waltz playing in my head and that only I can hear.” Maurice died on March 29 2009, aged 84.
