Profile Edit

Edith Piaf was the French born singer-songwriter known as The Sparrow, whose emotive voice delivered songs of tragic romance which reflected her own life.

Edith Piaf was discovered by a cabaret owner singing on the streets of Paris in 1935. She became a cabaret success and her reputation spread through France and then throughout the world. Her life was attended by tragedy, with the death of lovers, surviving the war in occupied Paris and lifelong battle with drink and then drug addiction.

Piaf recorded one of her signature songs, "La Vie en Rose" in 1946 and went to the States in 1947 where she eventually spent six months performing to packed houses in New York. She carried on her international success through the 50's, and at the end of the decade she recorded perhaps her best known track, "Non, Je ne Regrette Rien" which was also an international hit. Piaf died from complications brought on by cancer in 1963. Her funeral at Pere Lachaise cemetery brought Paris to a standstill.
